We had a great trip to Valkenburg in The Netherlands recently. Valkenburg is an interesting city with the river Geul running through it. The river splits into two as it runs through the city.

One interesting thing when we arrived at the hotel was spotting three ladies on the far river bank putting out their washing on a line. Upon closer inspection they weren’t actual people but statues and further research showed that they were part of an art installation throughout the city of Valkenburg.

It turns out that the sculptures are 40 different depictions in 19 different locations of ordinary people doing ordinary things. They can be single people or up to a whole family at a dining table and made of concrete.

They are produced by the mother and daughter team of Christel and Laura Lechner from Witten in Germany.
I found it great fun to get up at 6am and have a walk around Valkenburg to try to find more of the characters before breakfast.
